My cultural artifact is the fields. They have significantly impacted my life since I was a little girl. My parents have worked in the fields ever since they came to the United States and since I can remember I would notice how hard they would work and how tired they would get home. Whenever I would see fields I would think to myself that I needed to go to school and study hard so I wouldn't have to work in those conditions that my parents did. My parents would always tell me the same thing and as I grew older that message became more and more motivating to me because I wanted to make my parents proud and not go through the same thing they did when I actually have the opportunity to get an education and work in better conditions. I also got to work in the fields and I experienced it myself that it is hard and the working conditions are not good, having that little experience pushed me more towards my goals of going to college and pursuing a career of my choice.   Prompt 1- The cultural artifact I chose was this image of a man running and the caption says, "One more thing for men to rule." and at the bottom in smaller letters it says, "Join the men vs. women challenge at nikeplus.com". This message is used to sponsor Nike by trying to get men and women to join their challenge that is obviously putting them against each other as it does say "men vs. women". I chose this particular example because it is showing gender representation in fitness by belittling women. The message shows this man running which leads us to understand that the challenge is a race and that men will win because they always rule and that would just be one more thing for them to rule. As if they are saying that women are not capable in ever winning a man in anything because they cannot be more powerful than them. They are not taking into consideration that what if women were more conditioned in running then men or they...

Prompt 1: Identify a cultural artifact that is a representation of gender - that is, what it means to be a woman, man, a transgender individual, or a person who exists outside of the gender binary. Describe your cultural artifact. Post an image or provide a link to the cultural artifact. By looking and reading this cultural artifact it leads you to understand that being a woman, means that you are only good for cleaning and that it is your job. This is an ad about a soap called Mr. Clean and it states "This Mother's Day, Get Back To The Job That Really Matters." basically it is saying that a great Mother's Day gift would be this soap because a Mother (woman)'s job is to clean. The ad also shows a Mother and daughter holding the soap with a smile as if the mother is teaching the daughter that she is bound to do the same. Prompt 2: What does your chosen cultural artifact say about gender and gender expression? How does it reinforce traditional ideas of mascul...
