Prompt 1: Identify a cultural artifact that is a representation of gender - that is, what it means to be a woman, man, a transgender individual, or a person who exists outside of the gender binary. Describe your cultural artifact. Post an image or provide a link to the cultural artifact.
By looking and reading this cultural artifact it leads you to understand that being a woman, means that you are only good for cleaning and that it is your job. This is an ad about a soap called Mr. Clean and it states "This Mother's Day, Get Back To The Job That Really Matters." basically it is saying that a great Mother's Day gift would be this soap because a Mother (woman)'s job is to clean. The ad also shows a Mother and daughter holding the soap with a smile as if the mother is teaching the daughter that she is bound to do the same.
Prompt 2: What does your chosen cultural artifact say about gender and gender expression? How does it reinforce traditional ideas of masculinity and/or femininity? Does it attempt to challenge or push back against traditional ideas about gender and gender expression, and if so how? If not, why not?
This cultural artifact says that being a woman means that your job is to clean, not the man's and you are happy about it and about receiving gifts that are cleaning materials because you love to clean. It reinforces the traditional idea of masculinity because it is not a man's job to clean only the woman's and if the woman were to object she would be a feminist. It does not attempt to challenge or push back against traditional ideas about gender and gender expression because for a long period of time a woman's role in the household is cleaning and the ad is supporting that role.
Prompt 3: Do you feel that this specific representation of gender in pop culture has impacted the way you think about your own gender identity and expression? If so, how? If not, why not?
I feel that this specific representation of gender in pop culture has not impacted the way I think about my own gender identity and expression because I do not agree with this ad. I think that is an inappropriate Mother's Day gift because I do not think that a woman's purpose is the house duties and that they should be teaching their daughters that. I think that cleaning is a chore that everyone has to do, clean after themselves.
Prompt 4: Examine your chosen cultural artifact using Wendy Griswold's cultural diamond. What is the cultural object (the cultural artifact that you identified in Prompt 1)? What is the social world in which the cultural object exists and acts? Who may be the creators (producers) of the cultural object? And who are their intended audience (receivers)?
The cultural object is the ad of a soap called Mr. Clean that is saying to buy this as a gift to a woman that is a Mother because their job is to clean. The social world in which the cultural object exists and acts is one that accepts that a perfect gift to a mother is a cleaning object. The creators of this ad are the people who are trying to sell this soap. The intended audience are people trying to buy a Mother's Day gift for their loved one.

Hi Rosalba, I really enjoyed your analysis of the Mr.Clean advertisement, I like how you pointed out that the daughter in the ad acts as "learner" by being beside her mother while she shows her how to clean. They also both have big grins on their faces as if cleaning was something they found amazing. I also found the slogan they use very offensive, "This Mother's Day, Get Back To The Job That Really Matters", Mother's Day is a day to appreciate what the womxn in our lives have done and do for us, not a reminder that they should be housewives because society tells them that is where they belong.
ReplyDeleteHi! I loved what you had to say about this advertisement. Women should not be "known" to clean for the men. In this ad, she is basically teaching her young daughter how to clean as if thats what she is going to be doing all her life. I do not think that a women's job is to clean up after everybody in the household. If you make the mess, you clean it up. I do not like that this is used for mothers day because mothers deserve so much more than just a cleaning product!
ReplyDeleteWow this ad makes me madl! Like women, especially moms ON MOTHERS DAY are just supposed to clean the house instead of enjoying their special holiday? I agree with you on everything. This a does depict women as only being good for cleaning. The fact that the ad states this is the job that matters is ridiculous. What about raising children? I also don't understand why on earth this ad would be presented on Mother's Day. This day is a day that mothers are supposed to be appreciated and rewarded for their hard work, not encouraged to go do more work.
